Speaker Introduction楚剑 Prof CHU Jian is the Chair of School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Director of Centre for Urban Solutions at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. He worked for Iowa State University, USA, as a professor and James M. Hoover Chair in Geotechnical Engineering from 2011 to 2014. Prof Chu is currently the Chair of ISSMGE Technical Committee TC217 on Land Reclamation and a Committee Member for ISSMGE TC211 on Ground Improvement and TC303 on Floods. He chaired ISSMGE TC39 on Geotechnical Engineering for Disaster Mitigation and Rehabilitation from 2005 to 2009. Prof Chu has delivered over 60 keynote or invited lectures at international conferences. He is an editor for a high impact journal Acta Geotechnica and associate editor for ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering. He is a past president of the Geotechnical Society of Singapore.Lecture Outline Establishment of 3D geological model is an important step in overcoming the uncertainties in underground construction. In this talk, the 3D geological modelling and management system established in Singapore is introduced. The methods and procedure adopted for the development of the 3D geological mode in Singapore are presented. Another technical challenge that needs to be overcome is the updating of the geological model using new borehole or other geological data. We have attempted to use geostatistical and machine learning methods to determine and refine the interfaces of different geological formations and assess the uncertainties involved in the geological model. Some of these methods will also be explained using examples.
